Climate Frens DAO Membership NFT

Climate Frens have adopted NFTs (non-fungible tokens) as the new mechanism for holding and transferring membership to the DAO.

For frens not yet familiar with them, NFTs are (in our context) essentially digital membership cards that exist on a blockchain (a decentralized network of computers). They can be accessed through a crypto/web3 wallet on a phone or desktop computer.

Climate Frens DAO members will use their NFT to access our online community space and receive future perks airdropped to the wallet where they hold their membership NFT. Eventually, our membership NFTs will replace our need for usernames and passwords!

Each Climate Frens Membership NFT is unique. It can be transferred, traded, or sold on a secondary market. We ask two things of members who are considering selling or transferring their membership NFT: (1) please do not list your NFT below the retail price (300 CELO); and (2) before transferring membership, submit a nomination for the prospective new DAO member and/or ask them to submit an application for review by the DAO.

We intentionally assembled our ideal combination of organizations, technologies, and artists that align with our climate-conscious ethos, to make NFT-powered memberships possible for the Climate Frens DAO:

🔒 Unlock Protocol is powering Climate Frens DAO membership NFTs. Unlock is leading the way in NFTs and doing its part to build a truly open web. The Unlock Labs team and community are tremendously supportive; Climate Frens couldn’t have launched an NFT membership without them. Climate Frens DAO will also have the opportunity to participate in Unlock DAO, as we earn their tokens (UDT) through use of the protocol. Unlock was an easy choice as our protocol partner, given our shared values and collaborative relationship.

⛓️ The Celo blockchain is where Climate Frens DAO membership NFTs live. We chose Celo specifically because of their special focus on climate, and we’ve applied to join their Climate Collective. Fun fact: Unlock just added the Celo blockchain network to the Protocol, and Climate Frens is one of the first projects to use it!

🎨 Space Lab created the art for Climate Frens DAO membersip NFTs. We worked with Space Lab to create art for a participation NFT that we awarded to attendees of our Earth Day 2022 celebration, and we’re stoked to collaborate again to bring fun, whimsical art to the Climate Frens DAO membership NFT. Space Lab’s care for the environment and use of art to uplift Earthlings make them a perfect fit as our art partner.

What’s that mean? … Let us explain:

Each Climate Frens DAO membership NFT contains three different images, which correspond to different times of day and night.

The image a member sees when viewing their NFT depends on the time of day (we use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), because we can’t determine what time it is for a given wallet).

So, if a DAO member views their NFT just before sunrise or just after sunset (UTC), they’ll see the twilight version of the NFT:

And if they view it during the day or night (UTC), they’ll see the day or night versions of the NFT:
